ASSIGNMENT 20
A Tragic Play by Sophocles
Oedipus Rex
Read Oedipus Rex in your Literature textbook (pages 1216–1261).

When you’ve finished reading Oedipus Rex, come back to this study guide to read the following commentary. Note: Don’t skip the introduction to Oedipus Rex on pages 1216–1217 in your text. In this case, it won’t spoil your enjoyment of the play to understand the basic plot structure. Since Greek drama is so different from modern drama, it may be helpful to you to have a road map in advance. Also, if you can find a videotape of a production of this play, you should watch it. Ask at your public library.
